Football is an extremely violent sport, and the injuries that result are also often extremely violent. Dislocations, torn ligaments, and broken bones are fairly common while paralysis and occasionally even deaths have occured during games.
Sometimes a play doesn’t even have to look that bad for significant injuries to occur–Detroit Lions guard Mike Utley was paralyzed in a game I remember watching on TV, and even after watching numerous replays, it didn’t appear that he took an extremely violent hit–he was just hit at the wrong angle.
At the same time, many injuries in football are extremely violent looking, and often caught on video or photos in extremely graphic detail.
