On February 10, 2008, Florida Panther Richard Zednik had his throat cut by a skate blade when his teammate was falling to the ice.
Fortunately, Zednik was able to skate to the bench under his own power (despite profuse bleeding), and was quickly gotten to the hospital, and was quickly reported to be in stable condition. The game was then completed.
Oddly, this incident occured in Buffalo, the same place where in 1989 Sabres goalie Clint Malarchuk suffered one of the most graphic injuries in any sport, when he had an artery cut in his throat during the game.
Interestingly, neither TSN nor the Buffalo news report we saw referenced the Malarchuk incident at all, despite the game reporters picking up on it immediately.
